Project: Colour and Shape

Project Brief

In this week long project I have explored the use of block colour and positive and negative shapes to portray my chosen theme of Natural Forms. This has included painting, collage, ink, oil pastel and printmaking. I have worked with natural forms in my observational drawings, using techniques like cutting without drawing to get a flat colour shape and drawing an outline of the object to get a similar flat effect. Through research I have looked at the benefits of using a limited colour palette as well as bright colours and limiting them to a certain tone.
I found the project harder than I originally expected because of being limited to block colour a lot of the time. Previously we have been focusing on line, and the difference took some time to get used too. The most useful part of the week was when we were mixing colours to the exact shade, as it’s something I haven’t done before to such accuracy.
I would say that my biggest weakness this week was combining the natural forms with my word on the last day as I wanted to work from observation but my word; swift, didn’t allow much, especially at this time of year. At this point, I found it hard to motivate myself and I could probably have pushed it further with a bit more time.
The project on a whole has been very successful as I have been introduced to several new ways of working and done lots of experimentation with materials. In the future I would like to develop this project in the print workshop, as we had little time in there to work on this project, and it lends itself to the block colour and shape very well.
