                 Duration

2 weeks

This is a two week editorial illustration project which requires you to explore found imagery as a source for your illustrations. You will be given a newspaper or magazine article for which you will be required to produce a minimum of x3 possible outcomes.

Throughout the two weeks you will be introduced to a number of techniques and processes. You will be working with found imagery and be expected to explore this extensively in sessions and independently.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the two weeks you will:

·         Have identified and experimented with illustration techniques using found imagery.
·         Be able to identify and recall what is meant by the term editorial illustration.
·         Be able to identify and recall the implications of using found imagery in commercial illustration.
·         Have identified illustration techniques and experimental processes to develop concepts and ideas.
·         Have evaluated your own and each other’s work, identifying areas of success and areas for improvement.
Project Outcomes:

·       A minimum of x3 A4 editorial illustrations appropriate for a given article.

·        A written evaluation of the project, describing your journey, you’re learning experiences and a self-critique of your project work.
In this project I have used found imagery in several different ways to produce a minimum of 3 A4 editorial illustrations. Those techniques are: unexpected scale, ghost printing, weaving/slicing images together, block areas of colour, replacing/removing areas of image, type blocks, found type, monoprint, photocopier and Photoshop and the conscious addition of marks and drawing.
Our aim was to portray a given article using the found imagery. We began by working with a headline, which was helpful to get us thinking about possible meanings and angles because we didn’t know the story in detail.
This project has taught me a lot about the value of using found imagery and the different ways they can be used. This project also lends itself to very simple imagery and composition, so I learnt to be selective about the images I used and not overcrowd the page.
Weaknesses in my own work would be my tendency to overcrowd the page with images, and also to explore one avenue of the article, if I had more time, I would like to explore many different angles of my article, trying to produce images for each one. I would also like to experiment more with my current final pieces as I believe they could be pushed more and involve more techniques.

·        A minimum of 42 observational drawings in your A5 sketchbook.
